Can we go off-road ourselves?
No. Mystery Valley and Hunts Mesa are Navajo tribal lands — you must book a tribal guide. Monument Valley Safari and Simpson's both hold permits.
Is the main loop worth it?
Yes but crowded. Do the 17-mile loop at dawn before buses arrive, then spend the rest of the day in guided backcountry.
Altitude?
5,500 feet — mild, but hydrate and prepare for 30-degree day-to-night swings in spring.
