Eastern Sierra rock-climbing pilgrimage. The Buttermilks west of town run V0 to V16 — beginners get worked on the Get Carter slab, the strong sticks chase Evilution. Sierra Drifters guides the Lower Owens for wild trout in the gorge. Mule Days (May 19-24, 2026) lands a rodeo + mule shows + parade in town if the crew can time it. Erick Schat's Bakkery for the morning stroopwafels, Holy Smoke for brisket, Mountain Rambler for the post-climb pints. Sleep at the WayFinder, a real boutique on Bishop Creek. Questions

Climbing experience needed?
No. Buttermilks has top-rope and easy boulder problems for beginners; intermediate-and-up gets the bulk of the hits. Hire a guide via Sierra Mountain Guides for a half-day intro.
Mule Days dates?
May 19-24, 2026. Book lodging 4-6 months ahead — the town fills.
Owens River fishing?
Wild brown and rainbow on the Lower Owens. Sierra Drifters runs guided gorge access — the deep canyon water needs a guide and waders.
Highway closures?
395 north of Bishop is reliable spring-fall. Tioga Pass (120 east into Yosemite) is summer-only — confirm before routing through.
